A circular saw blade is blunt when the cut edges become frayed or rough, burn marks or burrs appear and you need more force to feed. Then it is time to have the blade sharpened.
Ideally, have it sharpened as soon as the cut quality deteriorates – that is when the least material has to be removed.
Typical signs
- frayed or rough cut edges
- burn marks on the workpiece
- burrs on the cut edge, especially on metal
- noticeably more force needed for feeding
- broken or chipped teeth
Why sharpening early costs less
A very blunt blade requires more material removal during sharpening. Sharpened in good time, more substance is retained – and the blade lasts longer overall. How often can a blade be resharpened?
There is no general answer – it depends on the material, the cutting volume and the machine. What matters is not to take the blade out too late: otherwise wear is greater, more material has to be removed during sharpening, and the risk of damaged cutting edges and teeth increases.
Broken teeth?
If teeth are broken or chipped, it is best to take the blade out of the machine straight away and have it inspected – just give us a call. Broken teeth: what to do?
